Keeping calm

The progression is always at play but keeping calm is not always easy. For example, as the muscles in Ian’s tongue and throat change shape and/or weaken swallowing and speaking becomes more of an effort than it was. Water on its own can be dangerous and cause Ian to choke, but water with a bit of food is ok. Milkshakes are easier to swallow (much to Ian’s delight). Adjusting Ian’s meals so that he can swallow easier, is a constant adjustment as each day is different and each week poses new challenges. Soups and foods like mince that are easier to chew and swallow are the order of the day and smoothies form part of most breakfasts.  A dietician assists Fiona with choices to make meals as nutritious as possible for Ian.

At times Ian has a build up of phlegm in the mornings and because his diaphragm muscles are not as strong as they were, coughing is a struggle. His next assessment by his physiotherapist and speech therapist will provide techniques on how to swallow, prevent choking and stack-breath coughing.  All in all, keeping calm is the most important factor.
